Ropes & Gray advised Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in its combination with Health Plan Holdings, formerly named Tufts Health Plan, representing the coming together of two of New England’s most iconic nonprofit health care companies. The combination closed on January 1, 2021 after receiving all regulatory approvals.
The new organization will serve close to 2.4 million members, providing high-quality coverage in every segment of the market, regardless of a person’s age, health, race, identity or income. Over time, the parties anticipate that administrative synergies will go directly to mitigating premium increases and member out-of-pocket burden. Ropes & Gray also advised Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in the August 2019 agreement with Tufts Health Plan to combine organizations.
The Ropes & Gray team was led by health care partner and co-chair Tim McCrystal, litigation & enforcement partner Jane Willis, and employment & benefits principal Abby Meyer (all of Boston).
