In Science Magazine, health care counsel Minal Caron discussed proposed changes by the federal Office of Research Integrity (ORI) to federal regulations on research misconduct that would permit ORI to make public an institution’s internal findings of research misconduct that would permit ORI to make public an institution’s internal findings of research misconduct under certain circumstances.
Minal notes that the proposed changes to the regulations allowing ORI to publish institutional findings would depart from the practices of other federal agencies that oversee federally-supported research.
He explains that, among other potential risks associated with this proposed change, the public release of such information could result in public misunderstanding of the nuanced information that institutions must capture in their written investigation reports.
