Health care partner Mark Barnes (Boston) co-authored an article, published in the National Law Journal and Law.com, that examines how U.S. universities and academic medical centers are facing more scrutiny around international research collaborations. The article explains how institutions are facing pressure to address risks that foreign governments, particularly China, are using the collaborations and awards to gain scientific and economic advantage at the expense of U.S. national security and technology interests.
The authors explain that while the value of global scientific exchange and the benefits of working across borders and in diverse teams is important, concerns about theft of intellectual property, “double-dipping” in federal grants, and failure to disclose other research support or commitments are mounting.
