Litigation & enforcement partner Maria Calvet discussed anti-corruption enforcement activity involving Latin America during Practicing Law Institute’s program, The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and International Anti-Corruption Developments 2023.
Maria and fellow panelists noted FCPA is at the top of most companies’ key risk areas, and the need for effective anti-corruption programs is paramount, particularly given the increased commitment by the DOJ and SEC to investigating violations and enforcement of the law. The panel deliberated on dealing with state-owned entities in Latin America, corporate regulation, anti-corruption due diligence, and compliance challenges, including tax, customs, and regulatory regimes.
Maria serves as co-chair of the firm's award-winning global anti-corruption and international risk practice and Latin America practice, co-founder of the firm's Enforcement Express, and is a former U.S. federal prosecutor and former in-house executive counsel of a Fortune 500 company. With a practice that spans two decades, Maria is recognized for her significant experience in anti-corruption and other investigative matters in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe, and in every significant business sector.
