In its April issue, The American Lawyer names private equity partners Tsuyoshi Imai (Tokyo) and William Shields (Boston) to the publication’s “Dealmakers of the Year” list. The prestigious list honors outstanding corporate attorneys who excelled in guiding noteworthy corporate transactions to a successful 2018 close.
Mr. Imai and Mr. Shields advised a Bain Capital-led consortium in its $18 billion buyout of Toshiba’s memory chip business, the largest-ever leveraged buyout in Asia. The American Lawyer article examines how the Bain consortium overcame numerous hurdles to complete the deal, including scrutiny from Japanese and Chinese regulators, competing bidders, financing challenges, litigation issues and trade tensions with China that threatened to undermine the transaction.
“Nobody could afford to have this deal not happen,” Mr. Shields told The American Lawyer.
