The Irish Council for Civil Liberties sent a letter to the supermarket chain Tesco chief executive threatening to sue Tesco over data collection at any checkout-free stores that it opens in Europe, spotlighting privacy issues raised by automation.
In a Financial Times article, data, privacy & cybersecurity associate Edward Machin explains that using a checkout-free store requires some way of ensuring payment and it is not unlawful in all cases for that to be done through technology or a Tesco Clubcard account.
